If you liked the soundtrack for Little Miss Sunshine, the heart-warming character bonding of Turner & Hooch and the senseless killing of Pulp Fiction, then you’ll be in for a real treat with God Bless America.
Written and directed by Police Academy weirdo Bobcat Goldthwait, God Bless America takes us along for the ride with the unlikely couple of Frank (“face-from-around-the-place” Joel Murray) and Roxy (“Weren’t you in that thing about the thing?” Tara Lynne Barr). Frank’s been unfairly dismissed from his job, diagnosed with cancer and plagued by awful commercial television, all culminating into the burning desire to rid the world of bad people as a final parting gift. Along the way he meets Roxy, a black sheep high school student with an overly enthusiastic fascination for the morbid. Together, they leave a trail of death and destruction as they trek across the U.S.
Now, the black humour level in this flick is right up there, so be warned of that. The death toll and murdering of ‘innocent’ people is simply a side effect of the tender and loyal relationship that Frank and Roxy develop. Over their trip, they both come to find acceptance in each other where they couldn’t find it anywhere else – it’s actually really sweet! The kind of movie that makes you go afterwards: “Hmm! You know what, that was actually really good! What a pleasant surprise”. You might even recommend it to others, just like I figure it’s worth passing on to you.
4 out of 5 jerks.
